Traveling around Philippines on a shoestring budget

Traveling around Philippines on a shoestring budget

You love to travel, your budget is tight, will it stop you to go on and see the best places this country has to offer??

Life & Style section of rappler.com just published a nice article about traveling without spending much. There are tips how to save some penny on your trips and how to enjoy vacation spending less. There are also some suggestions or ideas where to go in our 7,100 island country. Best places you've probably never been and may wanted (badly) to try to see and experience this summer vacation.

Including this picturesque (never thought we have) that I wanted to discover myself.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING WHEN TRAVELING WITH YOUR TODDLER

All the stuff you carried whenever you went out when your child was still an infant would be doubled or tripled this time. These means the amount of toys, clothes, gear and snacks you will need to bring to make your toddler comfortable and keep him entertained as well.

Below are the things you will need while on the road, and how to easily and efficiently pack them.

  • Diapers (very essential, thus bring some extra for emergencies or delays)
  • Baby Wipes
  • Diaper changing pad (either disposable or reusable for a quick diaper change)
  • Blanket/s (bring some for comfort and warmth)
  • Plastic Bags (carry different sizes for storing used diapers, clothes and garbage)
  • Toiletries and Hand Sanitizers
  • Tissues
  • Toys and Books (something that will keep him calm and entertained, make sure they are small and easy to carry)
  • Clothes, socks and shoes (warm and easy-to-wear clothes)
  • Bathing suit or swim wear (just be prepared)
  • Bibs (bring extra and should be washable)
  • Sunscreens and Sun hat (for heat and allergy protection)
  • Drinking Cups or Plastic bottle (make sure he drinks plenty of water aside to his milk to avoid dehydration)
  • Plastic feeding set (his own plastic plate, spoon and fork)
  • Portable high-chair or fold-able chairs (for feeding and rest)
  • Flashlight
  • Snack food (include his favorite snack)
  •  First aid kit (pain reliever and other supplies for treating minor injuries)
  • Insect repellant lotion or small mosquito net
  • Laundry soap (for washing clothes and bibs en route)
  • Car seat (if you’ll drive your own car)
  • Collapsible stroller (in case he get’s tired)

How to pack?

- Prepare things and pack them days before your travel. Keep a checklist and post them at the dresser or a table so you could monitor what you already have and what else to bring.

- Separate the baby’s stuff and clothes by using a diaper bag  and place it near you so you can easily find them.

- Bring your own extra like shirts and towels - just in case.

- Use reseal-able plastic for first aid kits and toiletries to avoid leaks.

- Have your own pocketbook or portable gadgets that you can use at night or when the child is napping.

- Don’t’ forget your camera or a handycam (and it’s battery charger).

How to Approach Stranger In Their Own Language/Dialect.

If you're wandering in a new place, enjoying your road trip or your vacays chances are you can never be completely spontaneous and will eventually find some answers about where, what and how.

If you don't know which direction to take in an intersection or which one tastes better, red or green... remember that it's not illegal to ask a question.

There are different ways to approach somebody and kindly say "Good Day. May I ask something?"

-in our native tongue.

Tagalog:                  "Magandang Araw. Pwede (ho/po) bang magtanong?"

Ilocano:                   "Naimbag nga aldaw. Mabalinti Agdamag?"

Cebuano/Visaya:     "Maayong Adlaw. Pwede bang mangutana?"
                                "Maajong Adlaw. Mahimo bang mangutana?"

Bicol:                      "Marhay na aldaw. Pweding Manghaput?"

Ilonggo:                   "Maayong adlaw. Pwedi mamangkot/kapamangkot?"

Pangasinense:        "Masantos ya agew. Sarag toy mantepet?"

Ibanag:                   "Makasta nga aggaw. Wayya na mangiyevu?

Kapampangan:         "Mayap a aldo. Pwede ku mangutang?"

- in an aliens tongue for "Good Morning, May I ask something?"

French:                    "Bonjour, peux-je demander à quelque chose?"

Italian:                     "Buon giorno, potrei chiedere qualcosa"

Spanish:                 "Buen día, me permito preguntar algo?"

Russian:                  "Dobroe utro, mogu li ya sprositʹ chto-nibudʹ?"

German:                  "Guten morgen, darf ich etwas fragen?

Thai:                       "S̄wạs̄dī txn chêā,s̄āmārt̄h c̄hạn t̄hām xarị bāng xỳāng h̄rụ̄x mị̀?"

Korean:                   "annyeonghaseyo, nan mul-eobolyeogo..."

Japanese:                "Ohayōgozaimasu, anata ni nanika o tazunete mo yoidesu ka?"

Chinese:                  "Zǎochen hǎo, wǒ kěyǐ yāoqiú mǒu shì?"

PINOY SOUVENIRS: Only in the Philippines

Whenever we while away the time at the mall, one souvenir section displayed near the main entrance of the Department Store keeps attracting my attention. It’s an “onli-in-da-Philippines” themed souvenir that I find really nationalistic.

Onli-In-Da-Philippines Mugs

These mugs are crafted in a very Pinoy style. Perfect for a coffee lover that definitely will recall his visit to Manila while having a sip or for the mugs collector due to its unique designs.

I used to collect mugs but because of my NPA status (No Permanent Address) which I changed my home address every 2-3 years, I naturally stopped collecting anything. (The last thing I've collected -my Books- are now kept in a box ready to move anytime, duh!).

Onli-In-Da-Philippines Bags

Very affordable, easy-to-carry, trendy and fashionable as well. There's one design that i swear to have someday. Can be use for your shopping, school, work, most especially in your travel or out-of-town adventure where you can display your nationalistic side. (Be proud to patronize your own than carrying a fake brand, right?)

Onli-In-Da-Philippines Shirts

(My apology for the blurred pic, I'll try to get a better one next time)

I always wanted to have the Pinoy T-shirt or something with 7,107 Island design (and I still haven't, still waiting to anybody who can give me one ^_^). It's very trendy nowadays. Politicians, celebrities, corporate officials and other known personalities are in the trend for this Pinoy T-shirt. I think it started with the late Francis M.s clothing brand. But here, you can also find shirts with designs of your own province and favorite tourist spots as well as the Filipino pride- Jeepney's. A really proud-to-be-Pinoy fashion.

Onli-In-Da-Philippines Caps

If you ever get tired of your NBA or baseball league caps, why not try to switch to one of these truly-Pinoy caps. In many different colors and designs to choose, it's a perfect alternate to your favorite sun protection.

Perfect souvenir for foreign tourists and even our OFW Balikbayans. What a great way to promote our tourism and our country if these items can be use abroad. ^_^

WHAT WOMEN SHOULD KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING ALONE

You finally got a week-long vacation leave from work. You’ve decided to take an out-of-town escape all by yourself and take advantage of your independence. While the idea is exhilarating, exploring places you’ve never been might have some ups and downs. So, before packing those backpacks and be wanderlust, remember these safety tips to keep you informed and wary.

KNOWLEDGE IS THE KEY

Google provides information about destinations through blogs and travel websites.  Make sure to look up for related news, guides and tourist reviews of a particular place. Travel blogs offers high definition photos and experience-based-reviews you can use as reference. They also provide suggestions about transportation and accommodation best fits your preferences.

Also, try to look up on culture and tradition of the place so you’ll not end up being out of place or lost. Learn how you will dress appropriately to avoid attracting unwanted attention and power plays.

BRING THE MUST-HAVES.

If you believe bringing mobile phone is a necessity, you should also understand that network signals can be a problem to your possible destination and may not be useful at some time. Bring a whistle (3-blasts from the whistle is an Internationally Recognized Distress Signal) or any handy noisemaker (a bell, toy horn, etc.) in case you get lost, need help, injured or stranded. A portable flashlight is quite useful when it gets dark as well. Carrying a map with guides and landmarks is useful whenever you’re in a crossroads.

LET OTHERS KNOW OF YOUR WHEREABOUTS

You may want to shut down your mobile phone to avoid calls and texts that might spoil your vacation. Therefore, tell your family, friends or roommate where you will be spending the week, when you will be back (try to be exact), the name of your travel agency or hotel. If network signal is possible and you want to check some message or voicemail, at least informed them of your whereabouts at some point. In case of emergency or anything goes wrong with your plans, they can call for assistance then fly in to find out.

SOMETHING TO IDENTIFY

Exercise carrying your documents that provides your identification such as passport, ID’s, credit cards, ATM or licenses. It’s in case of misidentification or being confused with another person. Emergency and extra funds for your travel plans is another thing.

Summer Destination: Watercamp Resort

Entrance Gate of Water Camp Resort

It's been three years since we transferred in Bacoor, Cavite. And every time we  have decided to go on an outing we always go to Watercamp Resort. My 1st time coming to the resort, it was a company outing, 2nd time was a holy week outing, and the 3rd and the most special is my son Raphael's 1st Birthday celebration.
Watercamp Resort is located in Panamitan, Kawit, Cavite. Second Best Resort next to Island Cove. But it is preferred by many vacationers because of its affordability and well-maintained facilities. Pool water is continuously replaced and landscapes, attractions and accommodations have been improved perpetually.

Getting There:

Via Cavitex

Watercamp Resort is now more accessible after the opening of Cavitex. So, if you are coming from Metro Manila, you can now avoid the congested traffic in Aguinaldo Highway by taking the said express way. But if you are commuting from Manila, from Baclaran you can ride a bus with "Cavite City or Noveleta" signs and ask the driver to drop you off at Watercamp or Josephine Resort. Buses going to Naic or Ternate is also possible to take but you will be dropped off right after Covelandia Rd. corner Tirona Hwy. From there you can take a mini bus with routes going to Noveleta or Cavite City.

Roadtrips: Planning every detail

Although it’s fun to take an unplanned road trip, que sera sera, it’s important to consider issues about safety, budget, time and destination to enjoy the trip smoothly. Lots of things might happen in a road trip and being prepared is your back up to any circumstances.

What you need to consider when taking road trips depend on the purpose of you trip. Purpose? Yes. Either will it be an aimless journey or a mapped out destination.

 WHERE TO GO

  • Your Hometown
It may be the place where you are born or where your parents grew up. A trip home gives one a recollection of their past. So, why not make a schedule of a trip going back to your roots. Visit a relative or childhood friends.

  • Festivals or Fiesta Season
Sinulog Festival in Cebu
We Filipinos celebrate different festivals as an honor to patron saints. Each hometown and provinces held festivities every year. Why not research festival schedule from nearby provinces and plan a trip from town to town. Tip: Avoid a road trip during Flores de Mayo season as you’ll get stuck on heavy traffic due to processions and parades. Or, if you’re ready to get stuck on traffic, and get a glimpse of the beauty of the floats and santacruzan, might as well go and join the parade.

  • Food tripping
It is everyone’s favorite reason for making a trip. Who would not want to try new menus from the other side of the country? Like, the Sisig of Pampanga or the spicy Laing of Bicol. Just make sure to eat moderately, you’re on the road remember…. public comfort rooms are not always comfortable neither always accessible.

  • Visit new places
Have you been in Baluarte Zoo in Vigan? Or in Banna, Ilocos Norte and tried the new Zipline adventure? Visiting new places you’ve never been and discovering what it has to offer is another perfect reason to plan a road trip. You wouldn’t want to be left behind of the new talk of the town, anyways.

  • Spiritual or Religious Quest
Kamay ni Hesus Shrine
Every year before or during summertime we observe Holy Week as Catholics. It is a regular holiday in the country as a tradition and a perfect time for busy people to go on vacation. It’s a great time also to plan a trip relevant to the occasion like a visit to holy places or do a retreat or a pilgrim. Why not try Kamay ni Hesus shrine in Lucban, Quezon, or a visit to Mt. Banahaw in Dolores also in Quezon. This kind of trip offers one a reconnection to spirituality not just plainly looking for fun.

Among these reasons, there are other things to consider in choosing a road trip destination. Such as;

Budget
Of course, what are you going to spend on food, accommodation, toll and entrance fees, “toilet fee”, and most importantly, Gas? Whether you’re driving your own wheels or rented a vehicle for your trip, everything will depend on your budget. Be it a lavish expedition or a frugal journey, it is quite important to have enough funds to spend especially on emergencies.

Weather
Although it is not a common practice for every “Juan” to check on weather conditions, why not try practicing it every time you plan a trip. We all know that this country experiences heavy rainfall that causes floods and landslide, so be prepared and advance in knowing where to go to avoid such calamities while on the road. You wouldn’t want to get trapped or stranded on a flooded road and ruined your vacation.

WHAT YOU NEED

After confirming your destination, budget and the weather condition, what’s next is making a list of what to bring along in your journey. It will save time and effort if you think you’ve packed all the necessary things.

Van For Hire in Cebu
Your Car – is it perfectly conditioned for a long drive? Spare tire, air, breaks, tools, and Gas? Bringing your own car maybe fun as you’ll be able to practice your driving skills on a long less traffic roads, but do you know what to do in case of flat tires and over-heats?

Food for snacks – bringing your own baon for the trips saves you some penny. Foods that can be bought on the road most of the time are pricey and parking sometimes takes time and cause delays. So enjoy sightseeing and some chatting while dipping on snacks and drinks you brought along. Just be a responsible citizen and don’t litter especially on the road..

Emergency Kit – being prepared beats the odds. Whatever circumstances may occur, always have something to pull out of your compartment. Tool box, first aid kit, communication gadgets, map or a compass (google map is the best if you have wifi), and emergency contact numbers are some of the most important to have in your journey.

Itinerary or Route Plan – it’s a road trip, there’s plenty of stop over, roads and streets to take, towns to pass by, bridges to cross and crossroads to choose. Map the trip by listing down possible places to stop by and distances of every destination. Make a list of possible activities and objectives you’d encounter along the way. That way, you won’t have to miss anything or worst, get lost.

Although, to some people getting lost might be fun to discover new places, routes and destination, if you’re not that resourceful and can’t read maps... it’s a waste of time.

Pack your things days ahead, this way, you can have an ample time to check all the necessary supplies and stuffs. As the day draw near, you might also think of other things to bring or another place to go for the coming trip.

On the contrary, it’s an adventure! And could be more exciting and more awesome if it became spontaneous and unanticipated..

The best thing…? Don’t forget to take pictures (obviously), so you can document every steps you’ve left and footprints you’ve planted on places you’ve been.. (and something to post on your Facebook as well)..

Have a safe trip.

Best Bohol Adventure

The province of Bohol has plenty of tourist spots that a one day tour is not enough to cover it all. It is best to experience Bohol on at least 3 days vacation. To Cover all the tourist attractions, you can either rent a vehicle or try your own driving skill and be equipped with a map.

Bohol Tourists Spots

The Chocolate Hills

The Chocolate Hills located in the town of Carmen is the most famous tourist attraction in Bohol.

Seen here is the viewing base of the hill. You have to climb up to the peak so you can get a better view of the many hills around the area. There are two ways to get to the peak, one is through the long, small-step stairs that truly knee-shaking experience and two is through the spiraling pathway on the side of the hill.

There are a lot of souvenir stores at the viewing base. A souvenir T-shirt can be customized so your picture can be printed on it as a proof of having been to Chocolate Hills.
Loboc River Cruise

The pride of the town of Loboc is the River Cruise. The cruise offers a short trip of the river while having an eat-all-you-can feasts.
While being serenaded by the local band on board, there's also a stop along the river, where you'll be entertained by a group of local singers, dancers and musicians.

Loboc River

Bohol Beach Club

The beautiful white sand beach of Bohol Beach club is located in Panglao, Island.
There a lot of beaches and resorts in Panglao, Island both public and private. Right beside Bohol Beach Club is the Dumaluan Beach Resort.

Aside from white fine sands, you can also enjoy their pool day or night. Unfortunately, Bohol Beach Club doesn't allow night swimming on the beach.
On The Other Side

This is the altar of Baclayon Church in Baclayon town just 6 kilometers away from Tabilaran. (Photo appears dark, camera flashing is not allowed)

The old stone-church of Loon.

The Man Made Mahogany Forest

The man-made forest located at the border of Loboc and Bilar towns. It is the first man-made forest in the country in a 2-kilometre stretch of a thickly planted Mahogany trees.

The Punta Cruz Watch Tower in Maribojoc, is 14-kilometer west of Tagbilaran City.

The Blood Compact site in Brgy. Bool, part of Tagbilaran City.

Second from Chocolate Hills, the Tarsier is famous and one reason why tourist came and came back to Bohol.
